Security Agents Block Amaechi's Supporters At Port-Harcourt Airport

Image
There is confusion at the Port Harcourt International Airport as security barred supporters of Rotimi Amaechi, the Rivers State governor, from welcoming the chieftains of the All Progressives Congress, APC, who are expected in the state today. A source at the airport told PREMIUM TIMES that scores of supporters trooped to the airport to welcome the visitors only to be stopped by airport security. Governor Amaechi, who was also on his way to welcome the APC chieftains when his convoy reportedly stuck in the ensuing traffic gridlock, alighted from his car and trekked about four kilometres, accompanied by a crowd of supporters, to the airport, the source added. Mr. Amaechi’s convoy, our sources said, is parked outside the airport while hundreds of supporters are barred from gaining entry. The situation has caused severe traffic gridlock at the airport with motorists going in and out of the airport experiencing difficulty. Yakubu Dati, Spokesperson of the Federal Airports Authority of

Gunmen have attacked a wedding convoy in Nigeria, killing more than 30 people including the groom. Islamic militants were blamed for the ambush on the notorious Bama-Banki road in the northeastern state of Borno. The road runs alongside forests which are a known hideout for Boko Haram fighters. The group has previously said it is fighting to create an Islamic state, although it is believed to be made up of different factions with varying aims. Witnesses said the wedding party was returning to the state capital Maiduguri after a ceremony in Michika in nearby Adamawa state when the gunmen struck. It is not known whether the bride or her family were caught up in the attack. One driver, who did not wish to be named, said he saw dead bodies lying on the road. "It was a gory scene," he told the AFP news agency. "All the victims were brutally murdered by the attackers." Violent attacks are not uncommon in Borno, where an army offensive to drive out insurgen

m) — Local airports were on a heightened alert Friday after a shooting at Los Angeles International Airport left at least one person dead and several others injured. One suspect was hospitalized following the shooting at Terminal 3 at LAX, according to reports. At least one Transportation Security Administration agent has been killed. Officials at Bob Hope Airport in Burbank said although they were under increased security, things were operating normally and no flights were diverted there. John Wayne Airport police were also on alert, and no flights were being diverted to the airport in Santa Ana. Some travelers bound for LAX, however, were diverted to Ontario International Airport. Many passengers said they got news they were going to be brought to Ontario at the very last second. “We landed, and someone said, ‘Ontario.’ And my first thought was, ‘Canada?’” said John Swinford, who was coming from Albuquerque. JAIL:A 13-YEARS OLD BOY SENTENCED TO NOT LESS THAN 7-YEARS IN PRISON FOR MURDER CASE.

A 13-year-old boy who became one of the nation’s youngest killers when he shot his neo-Nazi father to death as the man slept was sentenced Thursday to at least seven years in a juvenile facility. Joseph Hall was convicted of second-degree murder for the crime he committed at age 10 in 2011. He will be housed at a state juvenile correctional facility, a judge ruled. Judge Jean R. Leonard ruled Thursday that the maximum the boy can serve would be 10 years, which would make him about 23 when he gets out. He’ll be eligible for parole in seven years. The killing of Jeffrey Hall captured nationwide attention because of his son’s age and the father’s beliefs. The 32-year-old unemployed plumber was a regional leader of the National Socialist Movement and organized neo-Nazi rallies at synagogues and day labor sites. He had hosted a meeting for his group at his house the day before his son killed him on May 1, 2011. Prosecutors say the boy shot his father behind the ear at point-blank rang

PHONES:Android Updates As Google Announces New Nexus Phones.

Image
SAN FRANCISCO — Every day, Google crawls and indexes the entire Internet to help deliver the best search results on its website. Now the company wants to apply the same firepower to dig through applications on smartphones that run the Android operating system. In an announcement at the company’s office here Thursday, Google showed off an updated version of its Android mobile operating system, called “KitKat 4.4,” that can search for information both on the web and some smartphone apps. The updated operating system also flattens out parts of the user interface on Android smartphones and updates the company’s voice-recognition technology. The Android update is included in a new smartphone, the Nexus 5, which is a Google-made device that has a high-resolution camera and large, 5-inch screen. The update will start to make its way to other Android-based phones in the coming weeks. The larger Nexus phone, which was available Thursday on the Google Play store, is targeting buyers that have

Syria Destroys Chemical Site,Inspectors Say.

Image
BEIRUT, Lebanon — Syria’s ability to produce chemical weapons has been destroyed and its remaining toxic armaments secured, weapons inspectors said Thursday, as President Bashar al-Assad has offered unexpectedly robust cooperation, at least so far, with a Russian-United States accord to dismantle his arsenal. Elimination of Mr. Assad’s manufacturing ability is the most significant milestone yet in a process that still faces a monumental task: destroying the government’s 1,290 tons of declared chemical weapons in the midst of a bloody civil war that has killed well over 100,000 people and carved up control of the country. Weapons inspectors who have been in the country just one month say that despite battles raging across the country, deep international disagreement over how to stop the war and even what United States officials say was an Israeli strike on a Syrian Army base late Wednesday night, Syria has so far met all of its commitments and deadlines. By doing so, Mr. Assad’s gove
